Sticker Collaging on a
Friendship Layout

A Tutorial by Kerri Russ

When I first started scrapbooking, I used stickers on my layouts. Pretty watercolor stickers, themed stickers, bold stickers and fun stickers. I collected stickers. I hoarded stickers. I became a consultant and collected even MORE stickers. In short, I ended up with more stickers than I'll ever use.

Then I moved on to other embellishments and left my beloved stickers behind, gathering dust. Occasionally, I take them out and gaze at the prettier ones, part of me still yearning to use them and another part of me scoffing. I gave stickers away, desperate that they find a loving and caring home.

I'm happy to report that I've found a way to use my comfy stickers in a way that makes me happy because I use them and makes my layouts happy because they're not glaring out in open spaces, daring scrapbook browsers to look at them rather than the photos. Sticker collaging is a great way to use those stickers in your layouts, use the trendy collage techniques and be happy with your embellishments all at the same time.

I like to do my sticker collaging under a title or a quote printed on vellum. So pull out your stickers and let's use them!

MATERIALS:

Friendship Poem
Cardstock scraps
Miscellaneous stickers that relate to the topic OR just any ole stickers that are colorful and fun
Personal Trimmer
Adhesive
Brads or eyelets
Buttons, charms or other accent embellishments

POEM PIECE:

  1. Go through your sticker stash and pull out the ones you want to use to match your layout.

  2. Grab a piece of cardstock and trim it to 3" x 4".

  1. I found this perfect poem here at Pages of the Heart. Print the poem on a piece of vellum and trim to 3" x 4" (you can use the Journaling in MS Word article for instructions on doing journaling in Word):

Life is built on hope,
strengthened by faith,
and made richer by love
and friendship.

  1. Here's where the stickers come in. I'm using a variety of soft colored stickers and cardstock stickers. Just start putting the stickers on the piece of cardstock, randomly and covering each other slightly. It's okay if you have small open spaces here and there because it will all blend it is covered with the poem piece. Cover the entire piece of cardstock, leaving some to hang off the edge. Tear some in half for texture. Remember, this piece will be covered with vellum, so any bright colors will be muted somewhat.

  1. Put the poem on top of the stickered cardstock and adhere with brads or eyelets.

  1. Trim any stickers hanging off the edge if you want a clean edge (as I did). You could also leave them on for a more fun look.

ACCENT SQUARES:

  1. Cut a 1.5" x 6" strip of cardstock in a complimentary color to the layout.

  2. Cut a 1.5" x 6" strip of patterned vellum.

  3. Apply stickers to the cardstock strip, tearing some for texture and leaving some to hang off the edge if you choose.

  4. Trim any stickers hanging off the edge if you want a clean edge (as I did). You could also leave them on for a more fun look.

  5. Using temporary adhesive that can be rubbed off, adhere the vellum strip to the stickered cardstock strip.

  6. Cut the strip into four 1.5" x 1.5" squares. Remove the vellum and rub off the adhesive.

  7. Embellish squares with charms, buttons, brads, eyelets or whatever you choose.

Okay, now go give those unused and lonely stickers a new home! Experiment with stickers that coordinate with your color them or illustrate your subject. On my layout of my best friend Heather, I tried to use stickers that illustrated her life or our activities (school supplies because she's a teacher, apples because she loves the fall, candles which she also loves, etc.)

I've also used stickers with words that show through the vellum and go with my theme.

This is a two-page layout of photos from the CK Washington Convention
with sticker collaging using Memories Complete cardstock stickers and
coordinating vellum quotes, as shown above.
